Sidney Grant’s partner dancing career spans more than three decades of instruction, performance and mentorship at the highest levels of Ballroom, Latin & Argentine Tango dancing. Since winning the 2011 USA Argentine Tango Championship in New York City in 2011, Sid has taught both nationally (Asheville, Cleveland, Key West, Rehoboth Beach, San Francisco, among others) and globally, including Hong Kong, Greece, Israel, Mexico, and the Caribbean). For 25 years, he has traveled annually to Buenos Aires, studying with legendary dancers including Gustavo Naveira & Giselle Anne, Carlos Gavito, Juan Carlos Copes, Nito & Elba Garcia, Julio Balmaceda & Corina de la Rosa, Lorena Ermocida & Osvaldo Zotto, Miguel Angel Zotto & Milena Plebs, Omar Vega, Aurora Lubiz, and Javier Rodriguez (among many others).
He has belonged to SAG-AFTRA for over 25 years, appearing on TV and in film, and has coaches dozens of actors & actresses to dance, most notably Julia Roberts, Marcia Gay Harden, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kirsten Dunst, Ginnifer Goodwin and Julia Stiles for the film Mona Lisa Smile. He has danced on and off Broadway, and in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Sid was the former co-director of Dancing Classroom’s “American Ballroom Theater Youth Dance Company”, performing at the invitation of Marvin Hamlisch, and alongside Antonio Banderas on The TODAY Show promoting Take The Lead, inspired by the documentary film Mad Hot Ballroom in which he appears. In 2008, he launched a NON-competitive alternative to that program, BALLROOM BASIX, whose “fun, fitness & fancy footwork has touched the young lives of more than 45,000 schoolchildren in over 250 schools across all 5 boroughs of New York City!
Beyond his impressive résumé, what makes taking classes with Sid worthwhile is not only his deep-seated passion for tango, but his precision in communicating subtlety & nuance, and clarity of curricular construction as a teacher. His Portland weekend workshops will focus on economy of movement — refining details to dramatically increase your dynamic capacity as a tango dancer. Sid will impart a more rarified relatedness to the music & your partner, utilizing pause, rhythm and adornment expression…less and greater authentic connection to refine your movement and amplify your tango dancing. And yes — an entire workshop devoted to creative and beautiful endings.
